The Junebug Duster Jacket sewing pattern began with a love of vintage utility garments—pieces made not just to look good, but to live your life in!
Drawing on 1940s and 50s chore jackets, it’s been designed as a modern staple: something you can throw on over anything, in any season. This is a slower make ~ one that rewards your time with a garment that only gets better the more you wear it.
Junebug features a trapeze or swing style silhouette with a notched and shaped simple collar. There are 2 patch pockets that echo the collar detailing and oversize cuffs that repeat this beautiful detailing. You have the option to topstitch the collar, pockets and cuffs to create a lovely feature that is inspired by those little finishing details that made vintage garments of this type so special.
There are no fastenings although a button could easily be incorporated. The jacket is unlined and the seams are finished with a bias binding sewn using the Hong Kong method but you have the option to overlock if you prefer.
Sizing
Junebug is an oversize and very easy to wear garment coming in 3 sizes. For reference, I have a 46" bust and wear the Medium size and am 5 ft 6"
Skill Level
Very Confident Beginner/Intermediate
Skills Used
- Decorative Top stitching
- Shaped collar, cuff and pocket detailing
- Hong Kong bound seam finishes
Fabric Requirements & Recommendations
- Panama Cotton
- Cotton drill
- Canvas
- Lightweight denim
- Herringbone twill
- Cotton twill
- Hemp blends
- Washed cotton
- Utility-weight linen
- Corduroy
I recommend 2.5 metres of fabric and if using vintage or fabric with nap, approximately 3 metres. You will also need 1 metre of woven interfacing and 9 metres of 2 cms width bias binding. You can use a contrast fabric for the under collar, pocket facings and inner cuff should you wish.
The Greta is a romantic and flowing design with feminine details and an adjustable fit. It includes a dress and blouse option both with a drawstring neckline that softly gathers and can be worn loose or can be cinched in at the waist with the tie belt for a more defined silhouette. Both the blouse and dress feature raglan full length sleeves with elasticated wrists and a keyhole feature for the drawstring neckline.
The Greta dress features a gathered skirt panel and a lower hem ruffle which creates romantic volume and silhouette.
Inspired by traditional folk dress and the idea of carefree bohemian travel, Greta is a highly versatile garment that allows you to adapt the shape and the silhouette to suit your body, mood or occasion!
Sizing
The Greta is a size free and inclusive garment based on your measurements and is designed to be an easy wear garment with belt tie option to create a more defined silhouette
Skill Level
The Greta blouse & dress zero waste pattern is designed to be as beginner friendly as possible. The pattern pieces are easy to draft with detailed instructions in the booklet and confident beginners will find the sewing process straightforward.
The keyhole detail and gathering larger volumes of fabric might be new skills but the instructions are simple to follow and once mastered, will be fabulous skills to have under your belt.
Skills Used
- Sewing a keyhole placket,
- Gathering fabric
- Inserting elastic
- Basic pattern drafting
And bonus ~ Making your Greta is an easy way to learn to self draft your own patterns
Fabric Requirements & Recommendations
For a Greta blouse, you will need approximately 2 metres of fabric
For a Greta dress, you will need approximately 4 metres of fabric
You will also need 2 metres of narrow ribbon for the drawstring tie and 50 cms of 6mm to 1 cm wide elastic for the wrist
Scrap of interfacing for the keyhole
Both the blouse and dress versions of Greta work beautifully in light to medium weight woven fabrics that have little to some drape. Think cotton lawns, voiles and poplins for a soft yet crisp look. Linens and viscose linen blends also work perfectly for Greta. A viscose challis or silk can be used and creates a Greta with beautiful drape and movement but is a little more tricky to sew.
