When I first moved to Hastings 9 years ago, the first person I met was the beautiful Sophia. I've always admired her sense of style and wicked sense of humour, so I was absolutley over the moon when she asked me to make her wedding dress for her. What an honour and dream of a commission.
Sophia had found a stunning vintage gown in immaculate condition in a charity shop (charity shop Nirvana!) but it needed quite a bit of alteration to fit perfectly. I was in complete heaven working on her vintage dress which was probably originally made in the late 30's. Over the years I have altered a lot of vintage dresses and it's become a bit of a specialism (and passion) of mine.
Together with her fiance Jacob, they planned a Wes Anderson themed wedding which was really beautifully done and perfect for the sunny early autumn day. I also made the Liberty Tana Lawn fox print bow ties, ties and pocket squares for the Groom and grooms men.
The sweetest little flower girls- I made the pink dresses with white peter pan collars for Tuppence and Juniper.
I also made Sophia a 'Juliet' style chapel length tulle veil, embellished with vintage pieces we took from a 1920's dress that Sophia had found (If she wasn't doing such an amazing job as a nurse and mum, she would be an incredible stylist!)
The veil just looked breathtaking in the sunshine on the steps of St Clements Church in the heart of Hastings Old Town. Sophia looked so beautiful it just took my breath away (I was lucky enough to be a guest and share their magical day!)
For the evening reception, I made a bespoke lace tulle, corseted knee length dress. There were metres of net and tulle underneath to get that 1950's Dior look! Everybody danced the night away and had an amazing time at the reception at Winchelsea Village Hall. A day and evening filled with love and laughter- just what all weddings should be about.
These gorgeous photographs were taken by Dale Weeks- you can see more of his stunning work here.
I was so deeply honoured to be so involved with Sophia's wedding day and professionally it was such a highlight as I was able to make so many gorgeous things for a dear friend. As the sun set over the fields, I realised how truly lucky I am to live in such a beautiful place, with gorgeous friends and fulfilling my child hood dream of making beautiful dresses. Life doesn't get better than this!
